Remote Support & Diagnostics

A secure connection puts an engineer in front of your actual PLC in minutes — often fixing the fault before a vehicle would have reached site, and knowing exactly what to bring when it can't.

When a line stops, the clock starts

Every minute a machine is down is production you don't get back. The first hour of a breakdown is usually spent working out what's actually wrong — and if that hour is spent waiting for someone to drive across Melbourne, you've lost it before anyone has looked at the fault.

A secure remote connection removes that gap. Our engineers log in to the live PLC, HMI or SCADA, read the fault logs, look at the alarm and trend history and see what the machine is actually doing. A good proportion of faults are resolved on that connection alone. When they can't be, we arrive already knowing what failed, which parts to load, and what the plan is when we walk through the gate.

What we can do remotely

  • Interrogate PLC and HMI status — live tags, I/O states, fault words and diagnostic buffers
  • Review alarm and trend history — what tripped, in what order, and what was happening before it did
  • Diagnose sensor, drive and network faults — failed devices, comms dropouts, drive fault codes
  • Adjust and download program changes — under change control, with the change recorded
  • Restore a known-good backup — to a replacement controller, HMI or server
  • Talk your maintenance team through a fix — walking a fitter or sparky on site through the steps
  • Verify a repair after the fact — confirm the machine is running as intended once the work is done

What still needs a visit

We'd rather be straight about this than oversell it. Anything physical needs a person on site: failed hardware, terminations, sensors, damaged cabling and mechanical faults. So does any work that requires isolation, live testing or a licensed electrician's hands on the equipment.

Remote support shortens the diagnosis. It doesn't replace the electrician. What it does is make sure that when the electrician turns up, they're doing the repair rather than starting the investigation.

How the connection works

Typically an industrial remote-access gateway or a VPN path on your network, sitting between our engineers and the machine network. The connection is outbound-only, access is controlled and logged, and it's live only when you allow it.

We work with your IT and OT security requirements rather than around them. Plenty of our customers require the link to be enabled on request rather than left permanently open — someone on site turns it on when they call us, and it goes off again afterwards. That's a perfectly sensible position and it doesn't slow anything down in practice.

If there's nothing in place yet, we can specify, supply and install suitable hardware as part of a preventative maintenance arrangement or a standalone piece of work.

Program backups and version control

This is arguably the most valuable part of the whole arrangement, and it has nothing to do with speed of response.

We keep current backups of your PLC, HMI and SCADA programs, along with a record of what changed and when. So when a controller dies, the job is restore and run. Without that, the job is reverse-engineering somebody's undocumented logic, under pressure, with the plant stopped.

Put plainly: missing or out-of-date program backups are the single most common reason a breakdown turns into a multi-day outage. It's also the easiest thing on this page to fix, and it costs you nothing while the plant is running normally.

Remote support is only worth having if someone can attend when it isn't enough. A support arrangement that ends with "you'll need to find an electrician" hasn't solved your problem.
