Mobile Automation delivered the safety and control system for a medical device manufacturer's ethylene-oxide (ETO) steriliser, engineered to AS/NZS 4024 — a regulated process handling a flammable gas.
The challenge
ETO is flammable, so the steriliser demanded a certified safety PLC, intrinsically safe hazardous-area wiring, precise valve control, and a validated emergency-purge sequence — with full as-built documentation of every safety interlock.
Our approach
Mobile Automation's engineers mapped the existing safety controls, then designed, built and commissioned the complete control and safety system to AS 4024, tuning the process and validating the safety functions.
Scope of works
- Safety PLC and process PLC to AS 4024, SCADA and HMIs, and three MCCs (main, vacuum and ethylene) with VFD programming
- Mapped all as-built safety I/O and interlocks; PID valve scaling and tuning, including a new valve (XCV_711) with analogue-output IO-Link conversion
- Implemented and tuned the emergency-purge sequence
- Hazardous-area intrinsically safe barriers and glanding with a prescribed certificate of electrical safety, and ancillary signal integration into the SCADA
The results
- A safe, validated, AS 4024-compliant steriliser control system
- Every safety interlock documented as-built
- Precise, tuned valve and process control
- Hazardous-area compliance for a regulated medical process
