For a major Australian steel manufacturer, Mobile Automation delivered an electrical upgrade of the prime and finish coater rooms on the CPL2 coating line, to strict hazardous-area (Ex) compliance.
The challenge
The coater rooms are a classified hazardous area. The upgrade required correct motor earthing, identification of intrinsically safe equipment, and correct glanding and EX/non-EX segregation throughout — all delivered to a standard that would pass formal Ex inspection.
Our approach
Mobile Automation's hazardous-area experienced electricians carried out the works to Ex requirements and prepared the installation for inspection.
Scope of works
- 6 mm² earthing installed from the coater-room earth bar to all six motors in each of the prime and finish coater rooms
- Intrinsically safe and simple-apparatus labelling; EXd glands fitted on hood feedback switches; barrier glands and 20 mm gland replacements throughout
- Operator panels rewired into IP66 enclosures with correct EX/non-EX segregation; stack and tower lights re-run through Ex e boxes
- Fortress locks and solenoids installed with shielded cabling; pneumatics panels rewired; faulty density-meter transmitters and a servo motor replaced; hydraulic-pack panel commissioned
- Installation neatened, labelled and presented for formal Ex inspection

- A compliant, fully documented hazardous-area electrical installation
- Correct motor earthing and intrinsically safe equipment identification throughout
- Delivered on a critical coating line and readied for Ex inspection
